How long is the warranty period?
- If the product purchased on lepucreative.com itself has quality problems(not caused by customers), we support a free warranty period of 2 years (the ECG Monitors are 18 months warranty period), calculated from the date the customer purchased the product.
- We warrant that if you use our products as intended, they will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for 2 years (18 months warranty for ECG Monitors) from the date of purchase new. We do not warrant that our products will be free from general wear or damage due to misuse, modification, or improper maintenance.
- If you believe you have received a defective product, we will repair or replace the defective product or its defective components under the terms of this limited warranty. We offer replacement warranty services for the remaining unexpired period of the original product warranty. If you need to repair or replace your product, please contact us immediately at lepucreative@lepu-medical.com within the 2-year warranty (within 18 months warranty for ECG Monitors).
- This limited warranty applies only to the original purchaser of the product and products purchased directly from us. Our products are only legally sold by us and our authorized sellers, who must comply with our policies, procedures and quality control standards. We reserve the right to deny warranty claims for products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized websites. Frequently Asked Questions for Practical Use of Finger Oximeters
What is the finger oximeter used for?
- Finger oximeter is a useful non-invasive monitor of a patient's cardio-respiratory system, which has undoubtedly improved patient safety in many circumstances.
What does the finger oximeter measure?
- Finger oximeter measures the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood, which is given out as digital readout in percentage. The pulse rate can also be measured and given out as digital readout in beats per minute.
Where is the finger oximeter often used?
- Finger oximeters can be used for home care, also can be used in a variety of clinical institutions, such as hospital (ICU, recovery room, general wards), the clinic, nursing home, community medical center, etc.
What kinds of patients are appropriate for using finger oximeter?
- Finger oximeter is intended to do the measurement on adult and pediatric patients. Any finger with thickness between 10~22mm can be fitted into the finger clip, therefore a normal measurement can be done.
Which finger should I use to do the measurement?
- The recommended measuring site is the index finger. Actually, other fingers such as the middle, ring, and little finger can be measured as well if their size fits the finger clip well. The thumb is not recommended for use because of the not-good fitting with the finger housing. However, the SpO2 reading for different fingers may be a little different, 1 digit difference is common because of possible different peripheral circulation, especially for old people.
How to get an accurate reading when using a finger oximeter?
The technique of the finger oximeter has its pitfalls and limitations, it is possible to get wrong readings when using it improperly. The practical tips for successful use of a finger oximeter are as follows:
- Choose a properly sized finger, the finger should be clean (remove nail polish).
- Position the clip on the chosen finger, avoid excess force.
- Allow several seconds for the oximeter to detect pulse and calculate SpO2.
- Look for a smooth waveform, without this, any reading is meaningless.
- Read off the displayed SpO2 and PR(Pulse Rate) values when they are stable.
- If in doubt, rely on your clinical judgment, rather than the device readout.
What is the recommended operation for the measurement?
- Whenever possible, make the measured finger a naturally relaxing position, such as hanging in the air with fingertip up. Don’t press the finger with an oximeter against a desktop or other plate, don’t stretch the finger with tension, don’t move, bend or shiver the finger, and don’t press the button before a stable reading shows up.
Why seems the first reading inaccurate sometimes and how to prevent it?
- The first reading more relies on the signal quality and stability because there is no reference nor template at the beginning, the signal contaminated with interference (usually motion artifact) sometimes produces inaccurate readings. If you are in doubt with the first reading, the best way is to take off the oximeter and wait for it shutdown then take the measurement again.
How long time to get a stable reading usually?
- In a normal situation, which means the signal is rather good without motion artifact, the first reading shows up after 4~6 seconds since the display of the version number. If the first reading is not the stable value (that means the display value is changing), it will need at most 8~10 seconds to reach stable. However, if the finger is moving, or the signal is very weak, the first reading may show up late until the signal gets stable of motion artifact, the worst situation is a false reading after a long time. In this case, it’s better to restart the oximeter for another measurement, rather than wait for the stable display value.
What is the plethysmogram (waveform) and what is it used for?
- The plethysmogram (sweeping waveform) is the pulsatile signal, which varies in time with the heartbeat. The heartbeat detection and the calculation of pulse rate and oxygen saturation are all based on it, if the plethysmogram is not smooth and stable, that means the signal quality is not good as well. If the first reading appears with poor waveform (irregular and not smooth), then the reading is unlikely true, the more stable value is expected by waiting for a while, or a restart is needed when necessary.
What is the meaning of PI and what is it used for?
- PI is the abbreviation of perfusion index, it's a numerical value that indicates the pulse strength at the sensor site, it is calculated by the ratio of pulsatile (a.c.) component over constant(d.c.) component of the light attenuation. PI value reflects the blood perfusion at the sensor site, it is a relative value that varies from patient to patient and to measuring site. Viewing PI also helps to check the validity of the readings and verify the sensitivity of the oximeter, when PI is below 0.6%, the readings are unlikely trustable because it reaches the sensitivity limit of the finger oximeter.
What is the normal range of SpO2 values for healthy people?
- Many medical literatures show that the SpO2(oxygen saturation) value for a healthy person is not less than 95%, otherwise, it is necessary to take medical treatment.
Can I use the finger oximeter during the walk or run?
- Basically, the finger oximeter is not designed to be used while walking or running, such as stress tests or sports training. However, if the finger oximeter started to work and the reading is stable when the user is under a relaxing state, then the user can start to walk or run but keep the oximeter attaching well, the oximeter can still do the measurement with a certain extent of motion artifact rejection, please note that the reading may be frozen for a while or even disappear if there is an excessive motion artifact.
Does the nail polish affect the measurement result?
- The nail polish absolutely affects the accuracy of SpO2 reading because of the optical measuring principle. The color of nail polish determines the uncertainty, the red color normally gives false SpO2 reading, and a very dark color may cause no reading.
Does the incomplete nail affect the measurement result?
- If the nail is very small or incomplete, the readings could be inaccurate because the poor fitting between the nail and the LED sensor (at the upper side) makes unstable light scattering. In this case, try to insert the finger in such a way that the fingernail is on the lower side (photo-sensor), the oximeter may work well then.
Does the fingertip deformation affect the measurement result?
- If the bone or joint of the fingertip has deformation, the readings could be inaccurate as well because the fitting between the finger and the sensors is not good, which causes unstable light transmission. It is recommended to choose another normal finger to do the measurement in such a situation.
Does the finger oximeter need calibration routinely?
- The finger oximeter is already calibrated in the factory before the sale, the accuracy can be ensured during its life cycle, it is not necessary for the user to calibrate it routinely. However, some medical institutions require routine verification of the used medical devices, when this is necessary, the user can do the accuracy verification by means of SpO2 simulator, or it can be done by the local third party test house.
How to test finger oximeter by the test instrument?
- The test instrument, such as the SpO2 simulator is needed to test the performance or verify the accuracy of oximeters. The SpO2 simulator from “Fluke Biomedical” is popularly used on the market, we recommend the model “Index 2” series because it can accept the dedicated modulation ratio curve (so-called “R-curve”). Before testing finger oximeters by the SpO2 simulator, please first ask the manufacturer which R-curve is used. If the used R-curve is not one of the built-in R-curves, it is necessary to request the manufacturer for the dedicated R-curve and download it into the SpO2 simulator. When testing, set the given R-curve (in the menu item “MAKE” for Fluke Biomedical Index 2 Simulator) at first, and then follow the simulator’s instructions to do the accuracy verification.
Why batteries should be removed when not using an oximeter for a long time?
- The batteries can last a long time when the finger oximeter is in shutdown mode, a pair of new batteries basically can sustain more than half a year. Even though, it is strongly recommended to remove the batteries if you don’t use them for more than one month, the reason is that the erosion could occur at battery terminals after a long time in a humidity environment, and the batteries are more likely to be injured by a long time trickle current discharge and finally result in chemical leakage.
What should I do when some liquid is poured on the oximeter?
- When ingress of liquid happens to the finger oximeter, the first thing to do is to take out the batteries immediately to avoid electric damage to the circuitry. If the liquid is clear and thin, like water, it is possible to revive the oximeter by yourself with a hair dryer, you must dry it completely without overheat, then leave it a while for cooling down before powering up it again. If the liquid is thick or sticky, like coffee or milk, it is better to send the device to your local distributor for repairing.
